To say that everything went well during the transformations would be a lie. Rainer and Price vomited blood and endured severe agony. The both of them looked haggard and parched as if they had gone through a week in a desert. Rainer’s eyes were bloodshot, and he walked for a while as if he were punch-drunk.

They all survived, and Viktor later sat down with them and explained what they were to expect based on his own experiences. One of the first questions asked was about his own abilities. They wanted a demonstration, and they were insistent.

Viktor had never thought to purposefully bring out his new abilities. Up to this point, he had been relying on them to simply manifest. He could only think of one possible demonstration. Speed. The only physical difference he had noticed in himself was the speed he used to chase down Ilona’s killer. It was the only tangible evidence he could present.

Viktor looked around the room for a suitable demonstration. It wouldn’t do to just run around the room. He saw that Price was holding her knife with the tip resting on the table top. Viktor’s idea was to run toward Price, take her knife and return to his chair as quickly as he could. What actually happened was somewhat unexpected.

Viktor hopped out of his chair without much speed at all. As soon as he stood up, the knife jumped out of Price’s grasp, spun into the air, and hurtled toward Viktor’s now empty chair.

The group erupted in cheers.

“Telekinesis!” roared Rainer.

Price’s stony glare became an ebullient mash of wonder and amazement. “That’s not possible!” was followed by, “How did you do that? Can I do that now?”

“Odd choice for your demonstration, Captain,” Yee piped in. “Why send that knife at your chair? It would have been enough to make it levitate, am I right? The whole jumping out of the way at the last second was a bit much.”

Viktor was a touch red in the face. “You’re right. That was unexpected,” he admitted. “I was thinking about the knife, and then that just… happened. This is all totally new to me. I don’t think I should try throwing knives around again until I’ve mastered something a bit less deadly.”

Everyone wholeheartedly agreed.

Viktor was troubled by the lack of control he had over his abilities. He needed some advice on the subject and knew of only one person who could help him. After he had answered as many questions as he could from the group, and everyone had retired to their quarters, Viktor found himself at the door to Freya’s quarters. As he was about to hit the call button, he paused. He knew that Eir and Hlin were sharing a room with Freya, and he guessed that one or both would be reading his mind. The door would soon open, and the two of them would know why he was there.

Viktor breathed a sign of resignation as Hlin opened the door. “Come in, Viktor,” she said. Viktor wondered if Freya could read his mind as well.
